Beginning Day of DH
I cheated, and got started on Day of DH activities last night. Since September, I’ve been using an Acer C7 Chromebook, both for productivity and to learn a bit more about Linux and about some of the inner workings of computers.
Last night, I held my breath and did something I hadn’t dared to do before, for fear of bricking the device: I flashed Coreboot using one of John Lewis’s pre-built firmwares, permanently removing ChromeOS from the machine. I then installed Linux Mint 16. Everything went off without a hitch, and I now have a fully-functioning, very fast and light Linux computer. Suspend even works correctly, which is a nice perk (with the original firmware, it didn’t unless I wanted to stick with the original 2GB RAM module that shipped with the computer).
So now the tool that I’ll use for most of the day is up and running. My next step was to set up IFTTT recipes so that new posts will get pushed to both my personal blog and Twitter. Stay tuned for periodic updates throughout the day.
